Purpose & Organisation

HMC (Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference) Projects in Central and Eastern Europe has two purposes - to enable students from the ex-communist bloc to spend a Lower Sixth year in good independent schools and to provide similar opportunities to young teachers from these countries to spend a year in a British school. What began as individual initiatives in various schools came together in the early 1990s as a properly organised charitable enterprise. The first students were selected in 1993 and the first teachers in 1996. Since then, over 1,000 students and over 300 teachers have come to British independent schools.
