WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME for CENTRAL AND EAST EUROPEAN TEACHERS
This provides the opportunity for teachers in Central and Eastern
Europe to work for a year in a British Independent school. They
will be expected to combine teaching in their main subject(s) with
duties in one of the school's boarding houses and with help and
participation in the school's extra-curricular programme.
In recent years, teachers have come from the following countries
-
Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Moldova, Poland,
Romania and Slovakia.

The new UK Border Authority visa regulations have made it impossible
for HMC Projects to select for 2009-10 teachers from non-EEA countries.
It is hoped that an appropriate visa route can be established from
2010-11 onwards so that teachers from non-EEA countries can participate
again in the scheme.
The teachers are selected following open competition organised
by national bodies and interviews by a panel including a representative
of HMC Projects. The Administrator (Mr Roger Wicks) will then seek
to match their skills and experience with the requirements of the
schools which have offered teaching placements. The following subject
specialisms are of particular value to UK Independent schools: -
Mathematics, Sciences, Information Technology, Design and Technology,
Art, Music, Physical Education & Sport and Junior Classes. It
is also sometimes possible to find placements for teachers offering
French, German, Spanish, History or Geography.
The teachers will receive a salary and accommodation from their
schools. The salary will be not less than the 'Minimum Wage' (£172
per week for the year 2009) and teachers will also receive accomodation
and school meals during term times at minimum cost. This renumeration
will normally be sufficient to enable them to explore opportunities
for travel, culture and social interchange during their year in
Britain. Accommodation and finance are for single persons only and
the scheme does not enable couples to come to the UK together.
Each teacher placed in a school will pay a fee to HMC Projects
- £550 if the teacher comes from a country that is currently in
the EEA, £400 for other teachers. Each school will pay an administrative
fee of £800 per teacher.
